Awake windows, age by age

The single most profitable adjustment of the whole day: how long they can stay awake before tipping into overtiredness.

The awake window is how long your baby can stay awake between two sleeps without tipping over. On paper it sounds like nothing. In practice it is the adjustment that saved me the most time across the whole first year.

Because most failed naps are not problems with falling asleep. They are problems with timing.

The table

The ranges below come from the usual paediatric benchmarks. They are deliberately wide: two children of the same age can be forty-five minutes apart and both be normal.

Two points that change how you use the table.

The awake window runs from waking to falling asleep, not to the moment you put them down. If your baby takes twenty minutes to drop off, those twenty minutes are part of it.

And the last awake window of the day is the longest, the morning one the shortest. A six-month-old might manage two and a half hours in the morning and three and a quarter before bed.

Why overshooting ruins everything

This is the paradox that throws every parent: an overtired baby does not fall asleep better, they fall asleep worse.

When tiredness passes a certain threshold, the body releases cortisol to keep going. Cortisol is an alert hormone. It produces a baby who seems wired, laughs too loudly, thrashes about — and takes forty minutes to fall asleep before waking forty-five minutes later.

Hence the advice that sounds absurd the first time you hear it: when nights get worse, bring bedtime forward. It works, and it works fast.

Tiredness signs, in the order they arrive

The table is a starting point. Your baby gives signals — and they always come in the same order.

The early signs, the ones you want to catch: the stare that fixes and drifts, slowing movements, sudden loss of interest in whatever they were doing. That is the ideal moment to head for the cot.

The obvious signs: yawning, eye rubbing, red ears, hands going to the face. You are already a bit late, but it still works.

The late signs: crying, arched back, high-pitched shrieks, refusing the cot. The window has been missed, and falling asleep will take a while.

With the first, I waited for the yawns. With the second, I learned to watch for the stare that fixes — and naps got twice as easy.

How to adjust without losing your mind

Take the range for their age, start in the middle, and observe for three days.

If they take more than twenty minutes to drop off and are playful at bedtime, add fifteen minutes. If they cry as soon as you approach the cot and fall asleep in three minutes of restless sleep, take fifteen minutes off.

In fifteen-minute steps, not five. And over three days, not one evening: a baby has bad days like everyone else.

What the table does not say

A range is not a prescription. A six-month-old who comfortably manages three and a half hours, with good nights and good spirits, does not need putting down at two and a half because a table says so.

The table helps when something is stuck. When everything is going well, your child is a better indicator than any average.
