The daily routine of a 5-month-old

Five months is the age where the rhythm is readable but the naps still refuse to lengthen. Three naps, times that come back at roughly the same moments — and one in two ending after thirty or forty-five minutes.

That is not a contradiction. The rhythm depends on the body clock, which is in place; nap length depends on linking two cycles, which is not.

The day below shows the naps at their average length. If yours are shorter, look at the daily total rather than each nap on its own: three short naps are worth one long one.

The first window of the day is the shortest, the last the longest. That holds at every age, and it is what stops you putting down a child who has not built enough sleep pressure yet.

If your baby wakes earlier or later

The whole day shifts. What matters is the gaps between the moments, not the times themselves.

The key point at this age

Total darkness, before anything else

Of everything you can try against short naps, blacking out the room gives the most result for the least effort. Daylight is enough to prevent the move into the next cycle, and a merely dim room is not enough. It is also the only one with no side effect — unlike putting them down later, which almost always backfires.

When the day goes off the rails

They wake systematically after one cycle

At five months this is the most common situation and the least worrying. Three one-cycle naps add up to the same total as two long ones. Before changing anything, check how dark the room is: in any season, light is enough to prevent the move into the next cycle.

They squirm in the cot without falling asleep

Two opposite causes give the same symptom. Too early, and they lack sleep pressure and play for forty minutes; too late, and they have tipped into overtiredness and fight it. Adjust in fifteen-minute steps over three days, not five-minute steps over one evening — a baby has bad days like anyone else.

The last nap finishes too late

It mechanically pushes bedtime back, and a late bedtime spoils the end of the night. Aim for it to finish before 5.30 p.m. If it regularly overruns, that is a sign the midday nap started too late, not that the last one is at fault.

The questions of this age

How many hours of sleep does a 5-month-old need?

Between 12 and 16 hours per 24, of which 10 to 11 at night and around 3 h 30 to 4 h of naps spread over three.

When should the last nap end at 5 months?

Ideally before 5.30 p.m. Later than that it mechanically pushes bedtime, and a late bedtime fragments the end of the night.

My 5-month-old skips a nap, should I worry?

No, it happens regularly at this age. What matters is the next day: if the rhythm comes back, there is nothing to change. On days a nap is skipped, move bedtime thirty minutes earlier.
