The daily routine of a 9-month-old

Nine months is probably the most comfortable rhythm of the first year. Two well-placed naps, awake windows long enough for a proper outing, nights of ten to twelve hours.

What disturbs sleep at this age is no longer sleep itself: it is motor development. Pulling to stand, crawling, first steps along the sofa — every new skill gets rehearsed at night for a few days.

It is frustrating, and it is short. Unlike the four-month shift, this one really does pass.

The first window of the day is the shortest, the last the longest. That holds at every age, and it is what stops you putting down a child who has not built enough sleep pressure yet.

If your baby wakes earlier or later

The whole day shifts. What matters is the gaps between the moments, not the times themselves.

The key point at this age

Waking before 6 a.m. comes from a bedtime that is too late

This is the most useful counter-intuitive fact of this age, and it surprises every time. A baby waking at 5.30 a.m. is almost always a baby put down too late, not too early. Overtiredness raises cortisol, which spoils the end of the night — precisely the stretch where deep sleep has already gone. Moving bedtime thirty minutes earlier for a full week solves a good share of early waking.

When the day goes off the rails

They get up at 5.30 a.m. every morning

Check the total first: down at 7 p.m. and awake at 5.30 a.m. is ten and a half hours of sleep — that is not early waking, it is a complete night that starts early. If the total is short, move bedtime thirty minutes earlier for a full week. And black out the room: at this age dawn light is enough to end the night.

The afternoon nap finishes after 4.30 p.m.

It pushes bedtime past 8.30 p.m., and the end of the night suffers for it. Move the morning nap fifteen minutes earlier: everything else follows. Acting directly on the afternoon nap means treating the symptom.

They practise standing up instead of sleeping

Every motor acquisition gets rehearsed at the moment of sleep, for a few days up to two weeks. There is nothing to change in the rhythm during that time — altering it now would make you credit the day for something that comes from the legs. You wait, and it passes.

The questions of this age

How long are awake windows at 9 months?

Between 2 h 45 and 3 h 30, with a last window often close to 4 h before bedtime.

When should the two naps fall at 9 months?

The first around 9.30 – 10 a.m., the second in the early afternoon. The essential point is that the second ends before 4.30 p.m., otherwise bedtime shifts.

Does a 9-month-old still need a night feed?

Nutritionally, usually not. But it remains a question for your paediatrician, particularly if weaning started slowly or if weight gain is being monitored.
