The daily routine of a 7-month-old

Seven months is often a comfortable month: two solid naps, a shorter third, nights that hold. The rhythm is stable enough to plan a day ahead.

It is also the month the late-afternoon nap starts causing trouble. It gets refused, it shortens, or it ends too late and pushes bedtime. All three lead to the same place: the transition to two naps is coming.

It is not here yet. As long as your baby accepts the third nap more than one day in two, it still has its place in the day.

The first window of the day is the shortest, the last the longest. That holds at every age, and it is what stops you putting down a child who has not built enough sleep pressure yet.

If your baby wakes earlier or later

The whole day shifts. What matters is the gaps between the moments, not the times themselves.

The key point at this age

What actually triggers the move to two naps

The right signal is not age, it is the room the day has left. When the third nap is systematically refused for two weeks, or when it pushes bedtime past 8.30 p.m. without your baby being tired, it has had its time. On the days it drops out, move bedtime thirty to forty-five minutes earlier: that is the only thing to do, and the thing that gets forgotten.

When the day goes off the rails

The third nap drops every other day

That is exactly what the start of the transition looks like, and it is not yet the moment to decide. Keep it on the days they take it, and on the days it drops, move bedtime thirty to forty-five minutes earlier. Those are the days that make or break the night that follows.

The morning nap lengthens and shifts the whole day

A two-hour morning nap pushes the afternoon one, which pushes bedtime. If your evenings are stretching, shorten the first rather than touching the rest: it sets the tempo, and it is the only one you can act on without creating debt.

They wake at night and pull to stand in the cot

Around seven or eight months many babies practise at night, half asleep, and cry because they cannot get back down. That is not a rhythm problem. Work the reverse movement during the day — sitting down from standing — and the phase shortens noticeably.

The questions of this age

How long are awake windows at 7 months?

Between 2 h 30 and 3 h depending on the moment. The last window of the day is almost always the longest, often close to 3 h 15.

My 7-month-old refuses the morning nap, is this the move to one nap?

Almost never at this age. The move to a single nap happens between fourteen and eighteen months. At seven months a refusal comes more often from a morning awake window that has become too short: lengthen it by fifteen minutes.

Should the day run on fixed times at 7 months?

You can start, but keep awake windows as the main marker. A fixed plan applied on a day when your baby woke an hour early produces a whole day out of step.
